pondering

Is there a statistical correllation between the rise of contact lens use and the lowering of test scores in schools?

Addendum:
Here's my thinking: With the rise of contact lenses, you have fewer girls (and men for that matter) "forced" into the Smart Girl role by way of their eyewear. For those of you who dont think that people can be forced into a role by a pair of glasses, consider that social behavior is a back-and-forth construct, where where the only truly independent action* is the first one upon meeting someone... maybe.

*Unless you tend to act in a manner which is independent of those around you. You know, like a street crazy.

Is there any particular reason you're asking?

It came out of a conversation with my daughter about female image. I dont remember how, exactly. Not from the actual conversation, but from musings on it later on.

Sounds like you're describing a Clark Kent/Superman thing: As Clark, Kal-El represents the nerdy geek weakling who can't even get a date with a reporter; as Superman he can get the girl, but for some reason he's hardly considered one of the smarter superheroes.

Now if you're referring girls specifically, you have to remember that gender stereotypes play a part: the sad truth is most men fear women who are smarter (or stronger or richer, but TAS) than they are and as a result many intelligent women "hide" their smarts "for the sake of the relationship." Of course, for men who focus on, um, certain female physical attributes, glasses and smarts are generally secondary traits.

Then there's a third possibility that applies to either gender: pure vanity. Some people just don't think they look attractive with glasses but their biology insists that they do some to address their less-than-stellar vision.

But street crazy can be both fun and profitable...and sometimes leads to one-man stage performances...

Oy. LOVE glasses. LOVE them. Definitely the most sexy thing a man can wear. Am I odd to admit that?

@ Pryme: Yes, agreed to all that. But I was thinking beyond that, as to whether the lack of glasses (made easier by contact lenses) actually allows more people to be dumber than they would otherwise be because their behavior changed when they didnt have to wear glasses, that intelligence isnt simply a matter of equipment, but of how that equipment is used. No matter how smart some women may (or may not) be, do they use their brains differently depending on whether or not they where glasses? And are there any studies which might support this theory (or refute it, I'll take either)?

@ Lydia: Societally speaking, yes.
As a man who wears glasses myself, though, I gotta say that I agree with you.

@ Holster: none for me, thanks. Stage fright.
