My biggest problem with religion is that it rewards you for doing good acts, rather than for being good. Does this imply that humans are in general incapable of being good, or does it indicate a willingness to do whatever it takes to make people be nice to each other?
I think that it indicates there are too many blockheads in the world who aren't good and don't do good either. Pat Robertson, James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, et al cases in point.
You can't make someone be good OR do good. They have to take it upon themselves to want to and to do it.
My opinion - you want to do good and you do do good. Rare combination these days my son.
That's an excellent quote, but my favorite is, "I may not agree with what you say, ut I will defend to the death your right to say it." I have that posted outside of my classroom door. I'm doing a quote of the week from now until the end of the school year. I think yours is next.

Dave,
I just left this observation on another comment, but it seems to make a little sense here too:
The problem with religion is that it often makes you feel good instead of making you feel like you want to do good.
OOOO! My word verification is "pfefeu". That would have fit much better on the fart comment, wouldn't it?
