"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear -- fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, fear of getting down-sized or fired because of the plunging economy, fear of getting evicted for bad debts, or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer."
Hunter S. Thompson
There was a guy on the radio the other day (I've been trying to track down who it was), and he was saying that after September 11th, a lot of people stopped flying and started driving instead. Lo and behold, the year after 9-11 saw a spike in automobile-related deaths; over 1200, or, more than the number of people who were actually on the airplanes that day.
It's the same with something like Mad-cow disease, where people stopped eating beef, even though almost as many people die every day driving somewhere like the farmer's market to buy fresh vegetables than died from BSE altogether.

We are all rulled by fear in one way or another. Some fear is healthy, life the fear of burning ourselves when we put our hands in the fire, but we need to be rational about our fears. Though plane crashes are becoming (or are reported) more frequent(ly), we should not be afraid of the act of flying. We should be mroe afraid fo the things that are put in our food than we are of Mad Cow, but no one see,s to be discussing that.
