"What they do" is most of the work. And, like most people who do the work, the credit and the money go to the people who "supervise" them instead. This is true in pretty much every field, and the larger the organization, the more likely to be true it is.

Sad, indeed! But they do get paid exceptionally well for what they do - or at least they do here in Florida.
So do strippers, but what's money without dignity or respect (and nurses actually deserve the two).
I don't know about FL, but nurses in NC don't make much money at all -- "for what they do."
