wow, but bad this time

Okay, now this is some disturbing news: Remember this ship? I posted about these things last year some time, 'cause I'd never realized just how damn much stuff they held. Well, it seems that ships arent able to get the letters of credit that they need to make their various sailing trips from wherever to bring us all the stuff we need which in our global economy we no longer make here at home anymore.

Like, everything.

So, we might just find that we dont have enough stuff after a while.

This could mean trouble.

Props to Zargon the Malevolent, who made me worry. Finally.

I have plenty of water and canned goods.

I should stock up on animal food however.

Notice how the pundits are making this all personal for us now...WE won't be able to buy a car. WE won't be able to get a new credit card, or our credit will be cut back on our current cards WE won't be able to do anything we normally do.

I've been on a cash-based economy for years, ever since my credit melted down. It was ridiculous. If you cant save any money, what makes you think you can pay it back? They're the same thing in different directions, only saving money gets you interest, whereas borrowing money costs you interest.

When I worked..and my husband fixed my credit by putting me on his cards, I got a shitload of them.

Then, I wrecked my back and am now permanently disabled.

But I keep paying down the cards, not using them, but its money I owe someone and I pay my bills...

Until some fuckwit says its time to jack my interest rate 10 fucking percent for no reason.

That is when I tell them to take a long walk off a very short pier. Chase and another company aren't getting my money anymore. Fuck em.

But what you just said makes sense and it's too bad I fell into the trap of credit cards...wish I knew then what I know now..sigh.

Dont feel too bad Dusty.
The problem, as I see it, is that credit is too abstract for most people. When you have a hundred dollars in cash, you can watch it disappear, you can see when it's gone. But plastic money never has a physical presence, you cant see it as it goes away, and with the credit card companies smelling your blood in the form of interest hikes and various (increasingly larger) fees, they have always been willing to give you "more", so that, to a certain extent, it never seems to go away.
Also, unlike real money, you can spend more and more, and yet every month you pay roughly the "same" amount ("the minimum's just a little bit more this time, no problem"), which also adds to the unreality of it.
Maybe our kids, many who will be raised in a largely cashless society, will be better able to think of electronic money as concrete, but I doubt it. The credit card industry is a bit like the gambling industry; they not only take advantage of people's bad decisions, they deliberately find ways to enable people to make more of them.

Credit, like so many other good things about modern life, can be overdone... has been overdone, I think. Now we'll be paying for that.

I made the mistake of thinking I would always be able to pay off those things.

I never thought I would blow three discs and become permanently disabled.

The thought never crossed my little mind.
