Okay, here's an interesting article by Jason Godesky (courtesy of Ran Prieur), that discusses the difference between "food" and "edible matter", at least from a cultural standpoint. Seems that more often than you might think, people have starved to death in the midst of, if not plenty, then, enough not to starve.
This idea, that people will ignore the unconventionally useful things all around them, choosing death rather than straying from their pre-concieved notions, shouldnt actually be all that surprising. And yet, I was surprised.
Why do you suppose that is?
